Today is Good Friday. It is said to be a Day of Passion.
I was able to watch a rerun of Fr. Jerry M. Orbos, SVD’s Palm Sunday Recollection on TV the other day. The salient points of his sermon that hit me was about passion or our lack of it. I was not just touched. I was floored.
I agree with him. It seems that people today have lost the passion or "feelings" in the endeavors in life. Passion not just in our beliefs and veneration to our Creator but also in how we have lived our life. We have perhaps succumbed to the rigors of this life. We have lost hope and accepted mediocrity. We value quantity more than quality. As the song by the Righteous Brothers goes, "You’ve lost that loving feeling, now its gone, gone, gone…woooooh"
Whoa indeed!
Do you still give your 100% in the things you do? Do you still give your best in each task? Is good, good enough or to be great is great? If in difficult times, do you just roll over and die? Or face the adversities even to the point of being a Don Quixote? Do you treat your job as if it was not a job? Or are you just a 9-5 worker who cares just about the time and the pay? When you help, do you give our hand or do offer even your arms? With outstretched arms? Or clenched fist? Do you give until it hurts or only at your own convenience? Is it really service or just a hidden agenda?
Today is a day for reflection. Let us rethink all we have done these past few years. Remember that today, on Good Friday, Jesus "gave his all" for us. He gave his 101% for us sinners and strangers. He gave his own life for us. He could have chosen not to. He could have chosen not to be humiliated. He could have chosen a less painful death. But he didn’t. He chose excruciating pain. He chose a horrible death on the cross. Without any qualms, without any regret. He knew these would happen. But chose to let it all happen. In accordance to His Father’s will. With all His love and passion.
Let us live our lives with passion again. To live our life with enthusiasm and gusto. To accept the imperfection and negativity but dwell in life’s possibilities and positivity. Life is invaluable and sacred to be lived with mediocrity. Life is so precious to just drift away wantonly. Jesus Christ gave up His life passionately so that we will live.
As the song ends, "Bring back that loving feeling, Cause it's gone…gone…gone, and I can't go on, noooo…
Here is the complete lyrics of the song:
You've Lost That Loving Feeling Lyrics
Artist: Righteous Brothers
Album: You've Lost That Loving Feeling
You never close your eyes anymore when I kiss your lips.
And there's no tenderness like before in your fingertips.
You're trying hard not to show it, (baby).
But baby, baby I know it…
You've lost that lovin' feeling,
Whoa, that lovin' feeling,
You've lost that lovin' feeling,
Now it's gone…gone…gone…wooooooh.
Now there's no welcome look in your eyes when I reach for you.
And now your're starting to critisize little things I do.
It makes me just feel like crying, (baby).
'Cause baby, something in you is dying.
You lost that lovin' feeling,
Whoa, that lovin' feeling,
You've lost that lovin' feeling,
Now it's gone…gone…gone…woooooah
Baby, baby, I get down on my knees for you.
If you would only love me like you used to do, yeah.
We had a love…a love…a love you don't find everyday.
So don't…don't…don't…don't let it slip away.
Baby (baby), baby (baby),
I beg of you please…please,
I need your love (I need your love), I need your love (I need your love),
So bring it on back (So bring it on back), Bring it on back (so bring it on back).
Bring back that lovin' feeling,
Whoa, that lovin' feeling
Bring back that lovin' feeling,
'Cause it's gone…gone…gone,
and I can't go on,
noooo…
Bring back that lovin' feeling,
Whoa, that lovin' feeling
Bring back that lovin' feeling,
'Cause it's gone…gone…

In the just concluded Mayor Benjamin S. Lim Cup 2006 (an invitational shootfest by Dagupan City Mayor Benjamin S. Lim participated in by various g*n clubs held at the Dagupan Practical Shooters Association Firing Range in Bonuan Binloc), one of my bestfriends, kumpare, and Dagupeno sharpshooter Rob P. Erfe-Mejia bested two R.P. Team practical shooters and emerged as Champion of the Production Division. He used his reliable Glock17, cal. 9mm., which have consistently helped him win numerous tournaments including the 2nd Gov. Victor E. Agbayani Cup 2006 at the renovated Pangasinan PNP Firing Range in Lingayen, Pangasinan.

The prestigious shootfest held last April 8, and 9, 2006 is part of the Dapupan Bangus Festival 2006 activities.
Next trophy to bring home is the Glock Invitational Shoot*ng Competition, a Level III, PPSA (Philippine Practical Shooting Association) sanctioned match. This will be held at the CPRA (Cebu P*stol and R*fle Association) Firing Range, Mactan, Cebu on June 1-3, 2006. Right Rob?
Email me at sfbrvistro@gmail.com in case you would like to sponsor him on his way to glory in Cebu.

This Holy Week, are you a "vacational" or a devotional Catholic Christian?
Whether you choose resorts or churches, it’s your free will! The Lenten Season is time for family as well as reflection.
Me? Meditation, seafoods delight, books and DVDs at home. Or probably a few laps in San Fabian Beach on Easter Sunday. As long as I am with my family, everything is utopia. It’s the best way to spend my Holy Week.
DVDs and Books? In time for Lenten reflection, try these out:

A month ago, The Radioman posted something about: "What the beginning of your name say about you?"
My name starts with S, F, and B and according to the article:
For you, it is pleasure before business. You can be romantically idealistic to a fault and is capable of much sensuality. But you never loose control of your emotions. Once you make the commitment you stick like glue. You could get jealous and possessive. You tend to be very selfish often regarding yourself as the only human being on the planet. You like being the centre of attention. You are very caring sensitive, private & sometimes very passive. Turned on by soft lights, romantic thoughts. When it gets down to the nitty-gritty, you are an expert. You know all the little tricks of the trade, can play any role, or any game, and take your love life very seriously. You don’t fool around. You have the patience to wait for the right person to come along. You are very generous & giving, often selfless. You are kind nature & sweet, which is found to be attractive by many. You are a good friend.
You are idealistic and romantic, putting your lover on a pedestal. You look for the very best mate you can find. You are a flirt, yet once committed, you are very loyal. You are sensuous and privately passionate. Publicly, you can be showy, extravagant, and gallant. You are a born romantic. Dramatic love scenes are a favorite fantasy past time. You can be a very generous lover.
You give off vibes of lazy sensuality. You enjoy being romanced, wined, and dined. You are very happy to receive gifts as an expression of the affection of your lover. You want to be pampered and know how to pamper your mate. You are private in your expression of endearments, and particular when it comes to love. You will hold off until everything meets with your approval. You can control your appetite & feelings. You require new sensations and experiences. You are willing to experiment.
What’s in a name? Some people say that your name more or less defines (in a nutshell) who you are.
So why Simon Francis Blaise?
Since today is my birthday, let me share to you how I got my name.
Simon came from Simon of Cyrene (he was "compelled" to carry Jesus Christ's cross). It was said that I carried my parent’s cross as they were still in grief from the death (two years before my birth) of my older brother, Jose Ramon Miguel. According to my proud parents, I brought solace and joy into their lives again.
Francis came from two sources. One from my aunt, Sr. Esperanza L. Vistro, SFIC who entered the Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate Conception Order that year. Therefore Francis came from St. Francis of Assisi, lover of all creation, champion of justice, patron saint of animals and the environment, and founder of the Franciscan Order. Tita Ping as we all call her is the School President of the St. Joseph’s College, Quezon City. The other source of my name was from the brother of my grandmother (Amanda Reyes Rayos), Francisco Reyes of Sto. Tomas, La Union.
Blaise came from the name of my great grandfather. Tatay, or Dr. Blas F. Rayos is the founder of the University of Pangasinan and co-founder of NCAA. He was a hero, educator, philanthropist and a leader. His name came from St. Blaise, the patron of physicians, sick cattle, wax- chandlers, woolcombers, and of wild animals because of his care for them and of those with throat maladies. He is invoked against afflictions of the throat.

My wiki search about April 9 revealed that April 9 is the 99th day of the year in the Gregorian calendar (100th in leap years). There are 266 days remaining.
To Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant Christians, April 9 is Palm Sunday. The Sunday before Easter. The principal ceremonies of the day are the benediction of the palms, the procession, the Mass, and during it the singing of the Passion. The blessing of the palms follows a ritual similar to that of Mass. On the altar branches of palms are placed between the candlesticks instead of flowers ordinarily used. The palms to be blessed are on a table at the Epistle side or in cathedral churches between the throne and the altar.
In the Philippines, April 9 is a holiday known as "Araw ng Kagitingan" (Day of Valor). It was formerly named "The Fall of Bataan" or "Bataan Day". The "Araw ng Kagitingan" (Day of Valor) celebrates the Filipino gallantry, bravery and heroism in the provinces of Bataan and Corregidor.
For all its worth, April 9 is incidentally and serendipitously my birthday…
Gifts are not expected but appreciated! A U.S. Visa perhaps?

For almost 15 years now, I have been a part of a basketball group that meets weekly on the hardcourt. The group is comprised of 20 something to 30 something years old men of different backgrounds and personalities. The group is composed of young businessmen, a politician, OFWs, a teacher (that’s me), employees, salesmen, a law graduate, physical therapists, nurses, managers, and students. The degree of familiarity and developed friendship has not diminished the level of competitiveness among us.
We learn a lot of things in life outside the classroom. I have found a significant learning place in the basketball court. Throughout the years, basketball has taught me lessons that can’t be found in books or classrooms. These lessons learned are even multi-disciplinary. Physical fitness, Physics, Leadership, Team Building, Group Dynamics, Personality Development, and Values Education.
I am, in basketball standards, small. I stand just about 5.5 feet and am thinly built. I am not a skywalking, speedy or a sweet shooting player. But I take pride in my perimeter sniping, passing skills and defense. Definitely a late bloomer, it was in high school that I have fully appreciated playing ball and hoops. During class breaks, after classes, under the sweltering sun, and even in leather shoes. I became part of the varsity in high school only because 1. I was a senior and 2. We have a small school population. In college, I was a member of the inter-block championship team as a second stringer and a strategist. In many places, basketball pick-up games introduced me to a lot of new people and eventual friends. I played in the backyard of a neighbor, wooden gymnasiums, in classier exclusive subdivisions in Manila, premier school gyms, in Brunei, and even in a court made up of sand.
I also learned more about life more than about the game itself not only as a player but also as a coach. I have coached kids in several barangay/community basketball leagues. I also experienced being a playing coach (more of the coaching than playing) for our subdivision team. My capping glory as a head coach is steering a small college in a fourth place finish in the 1998 MCAAD (Metro Colleges Athletic Association of Dagupan). We had the smallest line-up and probably the thinnest too. Yet we managed to reach the battle for third place which we lost to the Juan Castro (former MBA player)-led Lyceum Northwestern. The champion that time was University of Pangasinan. Well, I was not as successful as my idols coach Ron Jacobs, Baby Dalupan or Phil Jackson but to my players, that experience was golden!
Basketball has instilled in me the value of discipline and responsibility. Before one can become a team player, one should take the responsibility of the particular role to be played. It also has developed my patience, resilience and sportsmanship. I have honed my decision-making skills enabling me to adjust and cope with different situations.
Basketball has kept both my mind and body sharp. It also has enabled me to practice my leadership and team building skills. It brought that winning attitude but with the values of honesty and magnanimity in defeat. Yes, we learn a lot from the losses. Stand up and learn from each fall.
These basketball lessons are valuable in the game called life.

Who will win the Pinoy Big Brother Celebrity Edition? Yes, PBB is about to end. Will it be replaced by a more relevant show this time? Well, Wowowee (without any remorse) is back so it wouldn’t take a rocket scientist to assume that it (being replaced by a more relevant show) would happen in this lifetime.
It could have been Rustom. But he is out. Literally.
Definitely not Zanjoe. (He was there for love team purposes only, yet that didn’t even really clicked). Someone even told me the advances and fondling was obvious since day one.
Definitely not Bianca. Looks yes, character I’m not sure (she allowed to be played around for the "love team" that fizzled) but what does she offer aside from looks?
John? The next Rustom? The youth’s example? Since when? Definitely not.
Oh yes, Keanna. She’s got drama, controversy, comedy and if she wins, horror for ABS CBN (her image problem). Would they allow that? For the millions, yes they would.
So don’t waste your cellphone load or money. It didn’t save a Budoy (who was there for uh, novelty) from being evicted, did it?
Because the Winner is… ABS CBN! Need I say more?
No Time and Tide, this will be the last post which is as showbiz as it could get.

It’s the summer season and to most of us, the stereotype is summer= beach, beach= white sand and white sand= Boracay.
Rob was right after all, there is such thing as a one peso fare going to Boracay. Well, just from Manila to Kalibo to be exact. What’s the catch? It excludes gas and tax. But it will still just amount to approximately Php 730 or $ 14 +. Cheap huh? This is offered by Cebu Pacific Airlines for the month of June though.
Domestic airlines are in the frantic rush to capitalize on the demand for travel to Boracay. Asian Spirit offers Php 2,719 or $ 53 +for a one way trip from Manila to Caticlan. Philippine Airlines offers Php 2,023 or $ 39 + this Holy Week (April 14 and 15) for a Manila to Kalibo one way trip. Cebu Pacific offers more than a thousand pesos less, Php 1,423 or almost $ 28 for the same one way trip.
This will definitely boost domestic tourism in the Philippines. And additional income for our fledging economy.
But for me, the nearest white sand beach would be Hundred Islands, Surip, or Bolinao in Pangasinan. It’s the same sunburn.
I could bring the Harry Potter book my friend bought from:

Or apply for a US VISA and go to the United States with this:

I guess, it must be too much sun…

Summer is here and I know for a fact that most companies conduct their human resources development activities at this time of the year.
I got an email from Anna (a high school friend) asking other friends and me for team building ideas. In short a really good team building activity. I guess this is for their annual corporate team building. She mentioned that it should be one that is aside from anything involving heights and ropes. I replied that I know a team building activity that involves bikinis and beach to which she replied; "That is very interesting to know. Bikini will be what we wear underneath and beaches will be the venue. Ha ha, how much? Free goodies enough?"
I was sweet-talked to it so I had no choice but to ask for more details. I was informed that the said team building activity would be sometime in April. I asked for specific team competencies she wants them to enhance, the goals she would like the team to achieve and who are the participants. Anna replied, "Communication and synergy, I guess. We don’t really have a team yet; we just have a "group" thrown in with each other assigned to the same department. Everybody works on their own and makes rules of their own; it’s the culture of the boss."
There are many team building activities out there that anyone can think of. Watch reality shows (Extra Challenge, The Apprentice, Amazing Race, and yes even the pathetic Pinoy Big Brother) and you could get a lot of ideas. For all we know, the activities of the shows were conceptualized by trainers and consultants using SLEs (structured learning experiences) and training icebreakers. Team building is fun and very effective if the participants are committed. The goals and objectives of the entire exercise should be well set and the facilitator must conduct a good great debriefing session afterwards otherwise the activity will just be a corporate outing disguised as an expensive training program.
And yes, a team more than just a group of people. A team is a group of committed interacting individuals sharing a common goal and the responsibility for achieving it. Team building is not just a buzzword, a catch phrase or a training fad. Team building is an intervention specifically designed to improve a company's organizational effectiveness. Team building is also a skill and any skill must be practiced to be mastered. A team building activity is an excellent way of boosting corporate staff morale and improving group dynamics and communication. Team building is exciting and challenging and has almost unlimited possibilities because human potential is almost unlimited.
Bikini and beach for a team building activity. It would be inexpensive and lots of fun!

The 2nd semester at University of Pangasinan just ended today. I’ve been up for more than two days reading and grading the final reports of my students in STS (Science Technology and Society). That is in between taking care of Luke- yes, even changing diapers (mom is in Manila for nursing affiliation). He uses either medium Huggies Dry Comfort or medium Mami Poko Disney Baby diapers (They are comfortable and not too expensive). They are not the cheapest in the market but they are for me, economical in the long run. Less diaper change, comfortability and the reasonable price was my gauge of over-all economy.
A father taking care of an infant is not just poster-cute but I regard it as an important fatherhood task. It builds bonding between the baby, which is usually more evident between the mother and child. Luke, who weighs almost 8 kilograms, is just 5 months old. He rolls from prone to supine and back on his own, is very talkative though his words are still incoherent baby talk, smiles and chuckles a lot, has good grip- both hands and feet (he could pinch with the use of his toes), he loves sitting down (still assisted though) and is attentive while he reads the newspaper, watch TV or blog with me.
At this exact moment, he is doing his monologue, probably doing a recap and game summary of the Miami Heat – Indiana Pacers game, which the Heat came from behind and won. Had not the gods prevailed, he could have been named Dwayne Anfernee. Dwayne from the Heat shooting and slashing guard Dwayne Wade and Anfernee from the Orlando Magic injured guard-forward Penny Hardaway Instead he was named from the saint and gospel writer, St. Luke. Thank God.
Luke is a Similac Advance guzzling machine. He consumes more than 6 Avent bottles of 6 ounces of the DHA, AA and Taurine-rich milk daily. He has tried Gerber and Marie biscuits and loves eating them. His pediatrician did not advise it so I do not feed him that often. He is getting bigger and bigger that he is about to outgrow his Lebron James II Nike shoes (9 cm). He wears sleeveless shirts and jerseys that fit one year old and above children.
For the lessons on fatherhood, Luke has become my teacher.
