ROLE OF SCIENCE AND TECH.TO IMPROVE HEALTH CARE.It meet the medical needs of our bioterrorism plans by developing specific new vaccines, mdicines and diagnostic tests through an aggressive research and development programs.

Developing new vaccines, medicines and improving diagnostic tests could be one way of improving the quality of health. Using the word bioterrorism though isn't appropriate. That would indicate the dark side of science and technology- its misuse and abuse.

ROLE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY IN THE IMPROVEMENT OF THE QUALITY OF HEALTH CARE——-
The improvement in health care quality will depend not only on traditional methods like excellence in education, continuing education, professional standards and principled practice behavior, as important as they are. It will also depend on developing the science of clinical practice, on taking a fresh look at ways of measuring and improving care, and on holding both the practice of medicine and the practice of quality improvement to the same levels of scrutiny and evidence as we hold technical clinical innovations.
Also, the government can put science into practice by developing measurement tools and instruments and testing them on an ongoing basis to ensure their reliability, validity, and usefulness in improving the quality of health care services. That's how important science and technology in health care.

You have said it nicely Ms. Cruz, the improvement of health care entails a multi-faceted approach- from the level of health education and then clinical practice- by giving quality care through technological innovations not just in the gadgets used but more specifically in the over-all system. It is not the lone job of the government though. Actually, the private sector has the bigger role in the improvement of the health care sytem (even student nurses have a role). We could use the available knowledge and technology to create quality and efficient health care or initiate innovations.

Yes, the Philippines’ Department of Health plays an important role in overseeing the entire health care sector; for example, it sets and enforces standards for medical services and facilities and promotes health initiatives. Another main responsibility of the Department of Health is to make sure that all citizens especially the poor and those living in rural areas receive basic health services. The department has set seven specific goals for improving public health, including controlling disease, establishing child survival programs, improving women’s health and maternity services, and expanding health service capacity.
The indigenous people in the Philippines has a wider access now to health facilities through the help of GMA para sa masa, Philhealth Indigent Card, sponsored by GMA, with the partnership of the DOH, LGUs, and even NGOs. With this free membership, of the qualifying indigent, they are able to have an access in Government Hospitals and Private hospitals with less hospital expenses, confinement period at least 24 hours in the hospital and they could even have the opportunity to learn about the promotive, preventive and curative health teachings given by the health care providers so as to live life a healthy one…

yes, the form and quality of health care in the phils. is changing though it is not as advanced compared to other countries. For instance, old equipments in the hospitals are upgraded for the quick, accurate, efficient diagnosis and treatment of diseases. Of course with this advancement of science and technology, and by adopting them, the quality of giving health care to the people willl improve because it helps a lot not only for the patients but also to people rendering care.

The Philippine health care system may still be far from being advanced and efficient but at least it is improving. Science and Technology is a tool that will help us reach that goal but let us not forget the greatest resource that have made our health care practitioners, world class. It is the Filipino's TLC! Of all the competencies, that is what sets us apart from the rest! That for me is our greatest form of technology- human technology of care. Benchmark it and keep improving it.

yes, bec. there are many discoveries now that are being applied in the phils and were adopted as well, like in the hospital settings, some medical instruments are replaced with a high tech one to save not just time and effort but also for the efficiency and effectiveness of medications.

The medical instruments/ diagnostic gadgets all share common features- increased functionality, accuracy and speed. In health care, time is of the essence. The Philippines, in this aspect should not be left behind. A deterrent in upgrading our medical equipments however is cost. That is one part of technology that should be remedied otherwise health care will remain expensive and unattainable by the third world countries that need the improvement of their health care system.

as a student i propose to our government to support other countries in spreading information about the newest medical technologies that can help filipino people for their health care needs. and i suggest also to the authorities who have power over the health care delivery system of our country to improve more in terms of the gadgets we have and to improve health care practices, for the welfare of filipino people. and lastly i suggest all the health care provider to expand more their knowledge in delivering care so that our health status will progress!

Malnutrition is one of the top leading problems that affect the health status of the filipino people.Malnutrition in the Philippines is caused by a host of interrelated factors – health, physical, social, economic and others. Food supply and how it is distributed and consumed by the populace have consequent impact on nutritional status.
As a student,i strongly suggest to enhance vaccination for those childrens who suffers from it.I could also ask the government officials to built some programs like seminars for proper diet,it could help the people to enhance their knowledge regarding health.Family planning can also contribute in solving this problem,to regulate the number of children,So that only few will suffer.

our health status is very poor in terms of health practices, medical gadgets, treatment, budget and access…

as a student i suggest to the authorities to enhance our health care delivery system in terms of health practices, medical gadgets, treatment, budget and to have easy access to health care facilities to prevent the early symptoms of a disease felt by the filipinos!

i propose to our doctors to have their own portable medical gadgets that is available anytime…. like pocket ecg, portable defebrillator etc….

yes that's true. God has made all things for the use of mankind. And He has inspired men to be able to invent and discover for mankind's benefit but with that power man misused it. Man tampered the creations. Like medicines and other helpful health tools. It should be to conserve life but many have used it to abuse themselves or others for their own pleasure and personal interest. How selfish!

In my opinion, it is not the lack of technologically advance mechanism that is holding us down from being globally competitive in terms of health care delivery system, it is the lack of implementation of those that is already available to us. We may not have the latest state of the art facilities, but it does mean that we can no longer delivery the best of care.

Sir,
Can I make a suggestion? Why not make an improvement on the teaching method in RLE using Technology. We can make a videotaped demonstration in RLE, that way, students can have a uniform reference on the proper procedures in basic nursing skills, this could also reduce the burden of some Instuctors. we could make use of the nursing review center as an AV room, that way 2-3 sections can view the demonstrations all at the same time.
We have a lot nursing instuctors who are very good in demonstrations. We can utilized that ability without exhausting them very much.
Yes…. tapping the procedures may take time but in the long run, it can be useful to the college of nursing for many years.
Think about it……

Good suggestion! I have already suggested that before and the department have that in mind for quite some time but I guess the idea was stuck in oblivion. Action and execution is what was lacking. And for whatever reason- financial or time constraint. But its good that you have brought back the issue to life. I will try to push this idea again to the department. Thanks for the suggestion!

[…] The 2nd semester at University of Pangasinan just ended today. I’ve been up for more than two days reading and grading the final reports of my students in STS (Science Technology and Society). That is in between taking care of Luke- yes, even changing diapers (mom is in Manila for nursing affiliation). He uses either medium Huggies Dry Comfort or medium Mami Poko Disney Baby diapers (They are comfortable and not too expensive). They are not the cheapest in the market but they are for me, economical in the long run. Less diaper change, comfortability and the reasonable price was my gauge of over-all economy. […]
